David Sasaki

David Sasaki

David Makoto Sasaki was born on September 16, 1928 in Los Angeles, Ca. He was the youngest of 4 children (3 older sisters).

With the onset of WWII and the threat of mass encampment of Japanese natives and Japanese Americans, David went to Japan with his family during the duration of the war. After the war, he returned to the U.S. (Los Angeles). He worked in Indiana, Nebraska and other states finally settling in Alabama in 1957. During this time, he returned to Japan and married Chiyo. The newlyweds moved to L.A. for a short period of time and then to Alabama where they have lived for over 55  years. Kazuko’s gift of art and her training in Japan made her decide to begin painting professionally during difficult time, and David assisted her with making frames and going to shows which eventually became his full-time occupation.

In the early 1980’s, Kazuko and David owned an art store in Century Plaza Mall which they kept until the late 1980’s. Travelling the United States to art shows, selling their work was their sole livelihood. David continued to make the custom frames into his 80’s, and sadly, passed away in 2013.  The quality of workmanship is apparent in the final product.

GOD SAW YOU GETTING TIRED (POEM)
God saw you getting tired
And a cure was not to be,
So he put his arms around you
And whispered “Come with Me”
With tearful eyes we watched you suffer
And saw you fade away.
Although we loved you dearly,
We could not make you stay.
A golden heart stopped beating
Laying loving hands to rest
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes the best
